A curious trend…

Years ago, as I embarked on my teaching journey, I couldn't help but notice a curious trend. It’s often easier to stumble upon a story starring an animal protagonist than one highlighting a vibrant character of color. The chances of finding a book like this become even slimmer when searching for female characters of color, in the STEM field, with intersectional and unique identities. This is just one of the reasons The Scientist In Me: #STEM Careers A-Z was my first book. Am I saying I will never publish a book with an animal protagonist? No! Animals are cute, creative, and a friendly way to teach children about complicated subjects. BUUUUT it is still super important to write and create children’s literature with main characters that represent people of color. I hope that as I continue writing, I can grow to create stories from both human and non-human perspectives teaching students about the amazing world of science.
